FFS were partnered with established heritage contractor, Lengard to undertake sensitive conservation work at grade 1 listed St Mary Magdalene Church in Paddington, which included a lottery funded extension to link the Church and Sunday School. The new building is designed to deliver a heritage and community wing, providing access and visitor facilities, including a learning space and café.

The church was built in the 1860's and is recognised as an outstanding and important example of Victorian Neo Gothic architecture & decoration, but was on the English heritage 'at risk' register.

Innovative Design Solutions

FFS were tasked with the design, manufacture and installation of Schuco HI Steel framed glazing for the new link building, under instruction from Dow Jones Architects.

Our brief included automated DDA compliant external Doorsets, oversize feature windows, with some incorporating glass to glass corners. The extremely high performance of the HI steel system assisted in offsetting the lower performance values of the existing structure.

Minimising the impact of our works

With culturally valuable and historic artefacts throughout the site the install was especially delicate, with FFS working very closely with both the Main Contractor and the Architects to minimise the impact of our works on the fabric of the building.

The new link building fitted into an awkward space with the challenge being to marry sleek modern lines with the historical Victorian architecture of the church and Sunday school. The modernist design compliments the two Victorian buildings perfectly and the perpendicular aspect echo’s the pointed arches of the windows and the soaring needle steeple of the church.
