Herbal House, Central St Martins College of Art

Originally constructed in 1928 to house the Daily Mirror newspaper, the building later became part of Central St Martins College of Art – Herbal House celebrates its industrial past rather than conceals it. Future Fire Solutions were contracted to provide Steel Screens and Doors utilising Voest Alpine profiles to provide 30-minute integrity and insulation fire separation between the open plan kitchens and the bedrooms.

A contemporary refurbishment

Originally constructed in 1928 to house the Daily Mirror newspaper, the building later became part of Central St Martins College of Art – Herbal House celebrates its industrial past rather than conceals it.

In 2016/2017 the historic print works received a contemporary refurbishment and upgrade by Shoreditch based architect practise Buckley Gray Yeoman. The design stripped back the building to its original materials revealing original brickwork and stone detailing.

The vast space stretches across ten floors, two of which were added on with a steel-clad rooftop extension by the Architects to house six duplex apartments with roof terraces and private access.

Stylish and sleek

Future Fire Solutions were contracted to provide Steel Screens and Doors utilising Voest Alpine profiles to provide 30-minute integrity and insulation fire separation between the open plan kitchens and the bedrooms.

The architect was very keen to echo the industrial, warehouse style of the building in the penthouse screens. The finished effect has a Crittal style aesthetic with laser cut glazing bars in a matt black finish that offers 30 minutes integrity and insulation protection for the residents.

The design of the Screens and Doors enhances the living spaces whilst providing a stylish and sleek solution that has a timeless quality but affords twenty first century standards for modern urban living.
